Being More Food Conscious!
I was warned about watching the movie, Food Inc. because my friend said, “you may never want to eat in the US again”. After seeing the movie, I understand why she said this. But I love food and we must eat, so here’s my mantra — whenever possible eat organic, locally grown, farm raised food that is grown and produced with love and intention!
There are amazing people out there with good hearts making really great food on a smaller scale. It is the mass production that has actually lowered the standards in many ways toward good food production. The original intention of the food industry was to feed more people with a booming population, but as the food industry increased in size, intentions got lost, money prevailed and greed entered the picture. The food industry in our country is corrupt. The industry has very little oversight and is totally in bed with the government. It’s a moneymaking machine. There are standards and health codes that are not being followed. The food industry is causing most of the problems that we are having with bacteria and viruses by altering the natural food process. Instead of fixing these problems at the source the food industry follows the allopathic medicine perspective and fixes the symptoms with more chemicals. We are ingesting this food. Did you know that in the large factories chickens are crushed with the bones and everything and then mashed into patties and doused with ammonia so the color is pretty? We eat these chemicals. We eat all the hormones, pesticides, E. Coli bacteria and ammonia.
Even though I am not much of a meat eater, I am saddened by the fact that I shop within a food structure that turns out to be a corrupted monopoly. With over 40,000 brands on the shelf only about 5 companies actually produce it all. They are genetically altering corn and soy to make most foods that are on the shelf. What is the consequence of eating all this genetically modified food? Check the label on the foods you eat, if you don’t see the original ingredient don’t you ever wonder what the ingredients are?
Mass produced food is cheap. Most people can’t afford to eat organic. But we have to flip this equation around – we can’t afford NOT to eat organically. Mass produced food is more expensive in the long run as it is directly related to our health and our doctor bills. It has been proven time and time again the importance of a healthy diet in preventing disease. This is not new news yet we ignore this for convenience. Fast food and processed food become addictions and are linked to diabetes, cancer and many other health problems. We have also seen through studies, medical research and other trailblazers like Dr. Gerson (http://www.gerson.org/GersonTherapy/gersontherapy.htm) that food can CURE cancer. I have personally met a woman in Peru that cured her own ovarian cancer (STAGE 4) through the use of a mushroom diet. So why aren’t we eating natural foods?
I link the food industry directly to health care, big pharma and money. If we have people who don’t eat well, they get sick and we have loads of drugs to take care of those illnesses. We’d have a lot less sick people if we ate preventatively. I recently canceled my health insurance to find a much cheaper catastrophic emergencies only plan, so I could take some of the money I was paying to insurance to instead buy things that are good for me, like what I eat and how I take care of my body. I can eat organically. I can make my own food. I can grow my own food. I can exercise. I can meditate and I can really live my life in a more positive and beautiful way. This is a sensible health care plan for me. Since I started doing Yoga regularly in 2006, I haven’t been to a doctor once except for my annual checkup and a few stitches.
One of the men that were interviewed in Food Inc. said the only way we can change an industry as corrupt as the food industry is to have everyone demanding Organic and to boycott the other brands. If people become educated on what is in the food that they eat they may not reach for the products that are in some cases causing disease. A while ago I started to approach food labels in a whole new way. If I didn’t recognize most of the ingredients I would look for an item that had less of them. Now I am starting to look up these ingredients as part of my food education.
We rely on the FDA and the USDA to police food for us trusting they will only give us safe products to eat, but who runs the FDA and the USDA? If you watch Food Inc, they show you that big wigs of the few corporate giants that control the whole food industry are now government officials monitoring this process.
Additionally, workers aren’t safe and the conditions are terrible. We employ illegal immigrants to keep expenses down and then the food industry turns them in to the Feds when they are exposed. It’s a dirty business.
There are so many things to recognize. Let’s look at the carbon footprint too. Why are we trucking stuff all over the place and increasing truck emissions? We could eat locally and seasonally. Why do we have so much waste on our shelves? Do we really need so many varieties of the same product?
Recently, I have also become aware the vibration of food. Real whole food has a higher vibration since its closer to nature. It has more natural conscious plant and Earth energy. There is energy in whole foods that translate directly to our body. There are foods that relate directly to the Chakra system. Processed food is almost devoid of this energy. What is a food’s vibration offering your body? Do you bless your food before you eat it to honor those that put it before you? When you eat what systems in your body are you feeding? Are you eating because you have to or want to? Do you know why you eat? These are all important questions to ask ourselves.
Being aware and conscious of food is what makes change and transformation happen for ourselves and the planet. So the next time you go to shop for food or sit down for a meal, ask yourself a few of the above questions. Perhaps you may view your food choices differently.
